Getting Started

This page contains information about getting started with Oracle Calendar.

1. Request an account

CITES provides Oracle Calendar accounts for $2 per month per account. There are two types of accounts: Person accounts (individual, shared, public group) and resource accounts (objects shared among users, such as conference rooms, laptop computers, and overhead projectors). The CITES Help Desk will assist you in creating the account(s) that best meet your needs.

To request an account, please contact your departmental Oracle Calendar coordinator. If you are unsure who to contact, ask your business office or send email to consult@illinois.edu. Once your account has been created, proceed to Step 2, below.

2. Set your Oracle Calendar password

Once your individual Oracle Calendar account has been established, you can set your password by going to the CITES Password Manager. CITES provides the initial password for departmental and resource accounts. Any subsequent password changes can be made within Oracle Calendar. After you've set your password you can access Oracle Calendar for the web immediately, or download a desktop client in Step 3, below.

3. Download Oracle Calendar software

CITES has purchased software site licenses for all the Oracle Calendar clients. To acquire Oracle Calendar software, go to the Software WebStore. You will need to know your NetID and password to enter the site. For detailed instructions on downloading the software, please see Downloading Oracle Calendar from the Software WebStore. After you have downloaded the software, continue to Step 4.

Please note that the desktop software is free to download. To use the software, though, you must have an Oracle Calendar account, which costs $2 per month. PDA software is available at a deeply discounted price.

4. Install the software package

Follow the links below for instructions on installing Oracle Calendar software. Both the desktop and PDA software synchronize directly with the Oracle Calendar server. After you have installed the software, proceed to Steps 5 through 7, below.

5. Configure the server settings

When you log in to Oracle Calendar for the first time, you will need to change some settings. You will need to make these changes only once.

Windows
Macintosh
Unix: Oracle Calendar interfaces for Unix systems (including Solaris and Linux) look very similar to the Windows interface. Please use the Windows instructions for configuring these systems.

6. Accept all University holidays

When you open Oracle Calendar for the first time, your in-tray will be the initial screen you see. Listed under New Entries you will see several events marked with candles. These events are University holidays that were created by Oracle Calendar administrators. You can accept all University holidays. For information on accepting entries, see Using Oracle Calendar.

7. Set your preferences

CITES recommends that you set these preferences the first time you log in to Oracle Calendar.

Instructions on how to set these and other preferences can be found on the Set Your Preferences page.
